AT&T Offers Phone Service over Internet in New Jersey.

Asbury Park Press, N.J. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Mar. 30--AT&T Corp. yesterday launched a service that will allow residents in northern and central New Jersey, including Monmouth County, to receive local and long-distance telephone service over the Internet.

AT&T CallVantage Service requires customers to have a high-speed connection to the Internet and will cost $39.95 a month after an introductory offer, which ends May 31. It will be available in the 609 area code by early this summer, a spokesman said.

Customers will have to choose a new telephone number, AT&T said. A person also could keep his or her existing telephone service and have calls to that number forwarded to a new CallVantage telephone number.

Features include voice mail, a log that tracks calls, and a do-not-disturb function.
